What is an Area Code?

An area code is a segment of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) that designates a specific geographic region's telephone numbers. Each area code helps route telephone calls to specific regions within a country, making it essential for managing the vast number of phone users.

Area codes are generally used in conjunction with local phone numbers and are necessary for making calls between different regions. They are especially important in countries like the United States and Canada where multiple states or provinces can have numerous area codes.

How Area Codes Work

Area codes are used to partition telephone communication services geographically in regions known as 'Numbering Plan Areas' (NPAs). Each area code allows for a large volume of telephone numbers within its servicing area. Initially, area codes were assigned based on population density, with areas having higher populations receiving easier to dial codes.

As technology and populations have grown, some regions now have multiple area codes due to the exhaustion of available numbers in the existing area code. This can result in an area having overlapping or adjacent area codes.
